About me

Abandoning the constraints of realistic form

Marielle was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1954. Her career in art began with a Swedish textile company where she developed her skills as a designer after graduating with an Arts degree from Stellenbosch University. At the same time, she maintained her own practise in pursuit of an individual vision.

In 1997 she moved to the UK and shared her enthusiasm and skills in art, with various community groups in therapeutic settings.

Over the years her style of painting has changed and her mature work has abandoned the constraints of realistic form and now embodies a sublime expression of colour.

“I have discovered a great freedom within myself in using colour as a vehicle to manifest my thoughts and feelings. The colour is no longer bound by form but expands onto the canvas/board to evoke a memory or a vision of a horizon; a threshold experience from which colours either emerge or recede as they are infused by light or darkness.”
